Video blog: Body Tapping

For some reason I felt like talking about body tapping, and I used "Time" and "Come Together" as examples of how I use the percussive technique.  Disclaimers - I caught a cold from the kids which I hadn't got over so I sound more nasally than normal - and I'm not much of a drummer, especially when I've got the drum kit set up for my 4 year old son! :)

  2. Yes, I've been waiting for one about this. What about the palm beat Ive seen? (upper wrist perhaps)

anyway, great video. It seems your personality is coming through more on each video.

    Keep'm coming :)

  3. I haven't worked palm beat into anything...that will have to be one for the far flung future - although I'm sure Kel Valleau has spoken about it.

I'm not sure whether my personality coming through in video is a good or bad thing :)

You may have noticed I finally gave in and put all my bloggy/lessony videos on youtube. Under a different account though. Youtube is the easiest method of video dissemination. I did choose to make them all non-public though, they go hand in hand with this blog, whereas my normal youtube channel isn't as "connected" with this blog. Oh and there is the ever-so-slightly underhanded attempt to ensure people come here, where the ads are...

It's interesting, I'm discovering I have just as much to say in video as I do in blog, if not more! Well not surprising, I just needed to find my footing with the video. I'm not quite there yet, but I've just about finalised the video/audio process, somewhere to put the vids and how to embed them...once I feel comfortable talking to the camera - well, then it will be easy! Just a matter of time. It's currently about a 2-3hr exercise making a 10 minute video.

Except that my latest poll looks like text blogging is the preferred method :)

  4. "Except that my latest poll looks like text blogging is the preferred method :)"

English is not my matern language, I understand written but not spoken. That's why I voted text in the poll, and I won't really be able to follow the blog if you just make videos.

I don't know if there's many people in my situation... probably not.

It would be fixed if you added subtitles, but it would take the 2-3hr to 3-4hr for making a 10 minute video. x(

  5. I, as a thumbpick user, FEEL EXCLUDED. Way to go, JAW!

  6. Good point Anon 1, there would be non-primary english speakers here, and I have been told I mumble...a text blog takes me half an hour maybe close to an hour if I am really rambling...so text will be the normal. I am enjoying trying out video, seeing what my mates think, but I voted text too. I normally read blogs on the train to work, and prefer text!

Ah thumbpicks. I used to use them, but gave up. I've got strong nails, I didn't like the overpowering bass with a thumbpick, I didn't really like the hand position either...although it's probably a better hand position than what I use! But the reason I stopped was because of that song. So, thumbpick, or groovy Come Together - up to you :) Sorry!

  7. Hi Jaw, I really liked the video, very entertaining (although I feel too lazy to even try this tapping).
I like both a written blog and video blog!

  8. Ha ha Rom, "entertaining" :) I've always aimed for light-hearted humour with something interesting and/or useful you can take away. And if there was nothing interesting or useful to take away - at least you were entertained!

Good to hear from ya mate.

  9. offtopic:

JAW I think you haven't added "guitarlabs" to your fingerstyle database. If you don't know about him, you might be surprised :)

  11. He's quite a player! Deserves a mention on the database for sure, adding now. Some really good creative sounds he's got going there. Very engaging playing, great sound and playing. Don't we all wish we could play at that level! I'm just going to have to settle for amateur hack :)

Nice pickup Anon - keep 'em coming, there's no way we are even close to seeing all the talent available even just on youtube!

  12. Hey JAW,
I also voted for text mode blogging. I enjoy your video blogs, it's kinda personal, as Ryan said, your personality comes through. Though, I have to rewind many times, some parts I just cannot understand at first hear - your accent doesn't make it easier for me, I guess :)

I should learn Come Together some day, you made it easier with this clip. Expect a lot of video answer for your version :)

Some weeks ago we discussed about nail-clicking and thumb-slapping, maybe you should demonstrate it in a video blog.

You never mentioned Chapdelaine made contact with you. He must be a nice guy.

Keep on blogging mate! (In any format)

  13. What accent? But yeah, noted, my missus tells me I mumble too much. Must remember to ar-tic-u-late my words in the future. Or add subtitles as Anon suggested :)

Have a crack at Come Together. It is such a cool thing to play. To date, only one other guy has had a go, he did a good job. Yep; I made a lesson video about three years ago about the song, and Mick contacted me and asked me to remove it. He was good about it, so I obliged. He mentioned he was going to make his own tab/video about it...I guess life got in the way for him because three years later I haven't seen anything (has anyone seen anything?) and it's just such a brilliant thing to go wasted. Watch his video though, not the one I posted a few years back, to get the feel of it. I didn't do a good job of playing or recording it that time. Hmm. Maybe I should re-record it. Maybe just discuss it more in future video blogs. Hmm.

Nail clicky flicky, thumb-slapping, okay, will try to remember to fit in my next video.

Yep, blogging, if I can't play my guitar I'll continue to talk about it :)

  14. The video has too much potential to abandon it completely. How would you explain the body tapping that well through text alone?

A mixture is probably best. I had not given any thought about people who can speak English well enough to understand, but with your success on YouTube I'm sure you have fans/viewers of all nationalities so it is nice to give something that everyone can enjoy.

I'm stuck now. I have in my head 4 songs I want to learn but I cannot for the life of me choose one to get down and dirty with :) After that vid of come together (rem i asked about it in an email a few months back i believe) I'm having a hard time not spending my now precious spare time (2 jobs now and soon school is back in) trying to play what you had in the video. (its hard!!) but I really wanna get time down and a couple others..
Thanks a lot.... you've shown me so much I want to work on that I dont know where to start! lol

    Anyway, take care JAW :)

  15. Hey Jaw, did you know that Sungha Jung plays the same arrangement from Michael Chapdelaine? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, he does a better job than me too! I first uploaded a video of it in 2006, but it was so awful I replaced it in 2007. He put up a version in 2008. I probably should have left up my first awful version - after deleting that one I decided I would never delete anything again. It's historical records ;)

Might spend some time this weekend re-recording & uploading some of my old stuff on the new guitar. I've got better video and sound capabilities now - and probably better at playing too - and it almost annoys me that at least half of my stuff is on steel string. That was so pre-2010, man!
